What influences teachers and students to use technology in the classroom?

Technology entering the classroom has been a huge part of student’s success’ and learning. It quite literally has changed the classroom completely. Teachers are influenced by their students to use technology. They want to maximize efficiency and work hard to help each student succeed. Therefore, they use technology. I also believe they are influenced to use it by their county standards and administration. Some schools might mandate that they use a certain amount of technology when lesson planning and teaching. Students on the other hand are different, especially now. The students of today grew up in a technological society and therefore are very comfortable with using technology on a day-to-day basis. Students also are influenced to use technology in the classroom because of the ease it provides to them while learning. Technology allows all learning styles to be compensated for and thus maximizes learning efficiency.

ISTE Standards for Educators

These standards are on point with why technology is used by an educator. One that stuck out to me as meaningful is facilitator. Facilitation in the classroom has changed tremendously because of the use of technology. In some ways it is negative, and I believe certain things should remain without technology. But, in other ways it has improved facilitation completely. One standard that is outside of my current skill set is analyst. I never thought of using technology as a way to analyze your students’ results to help them improve. This is something I would like to learn a lot about in hopes to use it in my future classroom.

Digital Natives & Digital Immigrants

A digital native is someone who has always been around technology. They can never remember a time without it. I have seen many differences in myself and the digital immigrants around me, but not all that much when it comes to the teachers I have interacted with. Growing up technology was only slightly used in the classroom, so my teachers were just as knowledgeable as I was. But as I got older more technology was continuously added to my classroom and other learning environments. From my view, my teachers and professors are quite expert at technology because of the amount of it they have to use. This view is shaping what I envision my future classroom to be like. If the trend keeps moving forward, technology will be in every aspect of the classroom. So, I assume teachers and students alike will have to be kept updated on all technology in order to have an efficient classroom. Overall, I agree with the term digital native. This terms fully encompasses today’s youth and the technology that they have grown up with.

  1. I agree analyzing is hard and in my previous education classes, I've learned analyzing is good for improving and modifying instruction! You can use the data to analyse where your students are in comparison to where they need to be.

    1. Hi, Morgan

Yes, you are right that we can use data to improve teaching. For instance, I have already analyzed Student Info Survey filled out by this class, and knew better how to meet diverse needs of the class. Also, I will ask the class to fill out a mid-term survey to further improve teaching and a course evaluation at the ending of the semester to further improve teaching next semester.

  2. Hi Mallory! I like that you brought up the fact that different schools have different standards for using technology. I think it's important for some things to remain taught using little technology. I think learning to type is an important skill in today's world but I also think it's crucial for students to still learn to write with a pen and paper too. I also agree that not many of my teachers have really struggled that much with technology either. But there were a few times as I got older where my teachers need minimal assistance with a few new pieces of technology. I really enjoyed reading your blog post!

  3. I also agree that teachers are relatively up to date with the use of technology. I'm glad you can see this. Not many other classmates agree. In my post, I acknowledged that our society is obsessed with labeling and that that is why the term "digital native" arose. Interesting post, I liked it!

You made a good point that our society is obsessed with labeling. I agree with you that teachers are relatively up to date with the use of technology.

  4. Hi Mallory! I was curious about the points you made regarding the ISTE Standards for Educators! Personally, any time I hear the word "facilitator" in regard to education I think back to my Educational Psychology course and the concept of scaffolding. It is really interesting for me to consider being a facilitator to students in regard to technology. I was wondering what you meant by saying that it can sometimes be negative and would love to hear more of your thoughts on the matter! I agree that I struggle currently with the analyst component. I typically think of observing students' achievements and struggles in person and would love to learn through this course how technology can aid in this!

    1. Hi, Alina

Alina, thanks for bringing up the term "scaffolding", which is an interesting concept. In education, scaffolding refers to a variety of instructional techniques used to move students progressively toward stronger understanding and, ultimately, greater independence in the learning process. If you are interested in the concept, you can check this article: https://www.edglossary.org/scaffolding/
